Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) / 80 × 100 = a 25% increase.
Why is a 50% loss not undone by a 50% gain?
Percentages compound off the current base. A 50% loss halves your value; you then need a 100% gain on the smaller base to get back to even.
What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
Moving from 10% to 12% is a rise of 2 percentage points, but a 20% relative increase. Mixing the two is one of the most common statistics mistakes.
